HISTORY fFor GOLDFISH
The popular image of a goldfish in a bowl has been depicted the world over - from ancient pottery created during the Ming Dynasty in China to modern popular comic strips. There are actually over 125 varieties of goldfish. All these varieties are thought to have originated from the Crucian carp, which can reach a length of around 40-50 cm. The goldfish is considered the oldest domesticated fish; its story began long before hobbyists began keeping pet fish in aquariums.
It was common for people to keep private carp ponds in China during the Tang dynasty. Other sites for these ponds were in the grounds of monasteries and temples , where monks would watch over them as guardians. It was during this period that various genetic mutations caused some of these carps to exhibit a golden coloration instead of their natural dull colors. These golden carps were selected and bred over many generations.
The fish continued to be popular during the reign of the Song Dynasty. The emperor Chao Kou, who was something of a goldfish enthusiast, even ordered the collection of these golden fish to help restock his ponds. Imperial favour could well have been a very potent influence in fostering the popularity of the goldfish.

Varieties for KOI
Koi varieties are distinguished by coloration, patterning, and scalation. Some of the major colors are white, black, red, yellow, blue, and cream. While the possible colors are virtually limitless, breeders have identified and named a number of specific categories. The most popular category is Gosanke, which is made up of the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku, and Showa Sanshoku varieties.
New koi varieties are still being actively developed. Ghost koi developed in the 1980s have become very popular in the United Kingdom; they are a hybrid of wild carp and Ogon koi, and are distinguished by their metallic scales. Butterfly koi (also known as longfin koi, or dragon carp), also developed in the 1980s, are notable for their long and flowing fins. They are hybrids of koi with Asian carp. Butterfly koi and ghost koi are considered by some to be not true nishikigoi.

Rearing Fish
Following infomtion get from http://www.geomancy.net/resources/art/art-fish.htm
Picture showing Koi's and Ranchu's (not in exact scale):-
Note:- Ranchu is the Japanese name for Goldfish. Goldfish are smaller and slimmer. While Koi is the short Japanese word for carp. The carp is pleasantly shaped with their down-turned, moustache-like protuberances, like a Wiseman or a Sage.
1. The Chinese word for `fish' (yu) means `abundance, affluence'. So fish symbolises wealth. `Gold' as in Goldfish symbolises (jin) in abundance (yu). Year after year, may you live in affluence. The fish is one of the eight Buddhist Holy symbols.
2. Many geomancers recommend placing fish tanks in a home to symbolise good fortune. It is not advisable for a person with the fire element to own an aquarium (which represents water). However, some geomancers believe that if one belongs to the `Fire' element, it is good to have a fish tank in the home to help balance the `Fire' element to counter too much fire element in a person. One way to do so is to look at a person's `Pillar of Destiny' or his/her 8 characters.
3. Alternatively, some geomancers believe that a tank of black fish (e.g. goldfish) can be placed at an inauspicious place to ward off bad influences.
4. The best locations for placing the fish tank is in the North wall or along the South East wall.
5. In general, I prefer rearing Koi's because their life span is like ours, they can breed at two years old and they grow very slowly as they enter their teens and continuing even at the age at which we begin to shrink. Alternatively, in the past, I was very sad when my goldfishes died at ages ranging from 1 year to 3 years. How sad. While my Koi's have been with me since I got them 5 years ago:)
6. One interesting thing about Koi's are that they do not like living alone but prefer the company of other Koi's. Koi's are very loving especially if you are the owner. The most enjoyable thing is to reguarly feed them from a particular spot. Place fish food pallets on your hands and place your hands below the water line, these fishes will feed from your hands:) I love them! Rearing fish like gardening has a soothing effect; great for calming one's nerves:)
7. What are the quantities of fishes to keep? Best to keep 1, 4, 6 or 9 fishes.
8. Can I keep other varieties of fishes? Even salt water variety?
Yes, there is no reason for not doing so. But the salt water fish are harder to `maintain'. More work is needed. Other common types of fish includes: Angel fish and the arrowana (a tropical river fish also called the dragon-fish) is a graceful species of the carp. The arrowana fish likes isolation and if you are getting this fish, one will do.
9. Picture below shows a house with a fish tank. By the way, the fish tank is placed at the North wall of the house:-
10. The Carp and Perch are often seen in paintings and art pieces. The goldfish is another favourite fish found in paintings. Fish are associated with luck.
